It addresses the acronyms head on: from Google’s perspective, “AEO” and “GEO” describe work that is “still SEO.” Within months, Google had also shipped a Search Console report for AI features, and Bing had launched its own citation report. Meanwhile, an industry of GEO tools, audits and retainers keeps growing.

These facts do not cancel each other out. Google is describing how its own systems work. Vendors are describing a real change in user behavior and a real measurement gap. This article asks one question: is GEO a separate optimization discipline, or mostly SEO extended to new surfaces?

The short answer, which the evidence below supports: for Google’s AI features, it is overwhelmingly SEO. Outside Google, the picture is less documented, and a small set of tasks are genuinely new or newly important. Nothing found in this review justifies treating GEO as a replacement for SEO.

Throughout, I label claims according to the strength of the supporting evidence. I identify something as a Google ranking factor only when Google explicitly confirms it.

What GEO Means

The term comes from an academic paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., posted 2023, presented at KDD 2024). The authors defined it as a framework for improving a source’s visibility in generative engine responses and built GEO bench, a benchmark of roughly 10,000 queries. Their headline result: certain content edits raised visibility by up to 40% in their tests.

The industry then stretched the term. “AEO” (answer engine optimization) grew out of featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice assistants. “GEO” is now used for visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. Vendors disagree on where one ends and the other begins; several explicitly say the two describe substantially the same work. Microsoft Advertising’s retail focused guide to AEO and GEO, summarized by Search Engine Journal, treats AEO as making product and content data easy for assistants to retrieve and GEO as increasing clarity, trust and authority. SEJ’s read is that many suggestions are plain SEO while some relate only to AI surfaces.

Because the terms have no fixed definition, “GEO” in any given article may mean on-page edits, brand-mention campaigns, structured feeds or monitoring software. That ambiguity is the first reason to be careful.

Why GEO Became Popular

Three forces explain it, and only some are about evidence.

Real behavior change. People ask longer questions and get synthesized answers. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are designed to send people to websites, but publishers see fewer clicks on some queries, and anxiety follows.

A measurement vacuum. Until early 2026, site owners had no first party view of AI visibility. Bing’s AI Performance report arrived in February 2026 as a public preview; Google’s generative AI performance report reached all sites. In the gap, third-party tools sold “AI visibility scores.”

Unstable proxies. Many SEOs assumed top 10 rankings meant citations. Ahrefs’ data showed that assumption weakening (see section 8), which made a new label feel necessary. Forrester analyst Nikhil Lai argued in 2025, as cited on Wikipedia, that AEO is “significantly, but not fundamentally, different from SEO,” and that advocates of new terms tend to exaggerate the gap to carve out a place in the marketing stack. That is an analyst’s opinion, not a measurement, but it names the incentive problem plainly.

What Google Actually Documents

Google’s optimization guide is the most direct primary source. Its main points:

SEO remains relevant because the generative features are rooted in core ranking and quality systems. Google names two techniques: retrieval augmented generation (grounding on pages retrieved from the Search index) and query fan-out (concurrent related queries the model generates).

Eligibility requires that a page be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google adds that meeting requirements never guarantees crawling, indexing or serving.

Content advice centers on “non commodity” content: a unique point of view, first-hand experience, clear organization, and good images and video. Google says this will likely influence presence in generative AI search over the long run more than any other suggestion in the guide.

A myth busting section says you can ignore llms.txt and similar files, “chunking,” rewriting content only for AI, seeking inauthentic mentions, and over-focusing on structured data.

Scaled content warning. Creating separate pages for every fan out variant primarily to manipulate AI responses can violate the scaled content abuse spam policy.

Measurement. Use the Search Console generative AI performance report. Google also warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

Agentic experiences are flagged as emerging, with early guidance on browser agents.

The separate AI features documentation says the same on the point most relevant here: you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and traffic from AI features is included in overall Search Console totals.

Two caveats keep this honest. First, this is Google describing Google; it does not describe ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude. Second, Google’s own text notes that “unique, valuable” content means different things to different people, so the guidance is directional rather than a recipe. One new administrative wrinkle: Google announced a test of a Search Console control that lets sites opt in or out of generative AI features, and says it will not be used as a ranking signal outside those features. That is a permission setting, not an optimization lever.

What Changes in AI Search

Retrieval happens in several queries, not one. Fan out means a page may be retrieved for a sub question the user never typed. Topic completeness matters more than exact match phrasing, but Google says its systems understand synonyms, so you don’t need to chase every variant.

Citation is not rank. AI answers show a handful of sources in a different layout. Visibility is share of citations, not position.

Engines differ. Ahrefs found only 13.7% URL overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode in December 2025, as summarized in a third party compilation. Treat “AI search” as several products.

Media mix widens. In Ahrefs’ 2026 dataset, YouTube made up about 5.6% of AI Overview citations, and 18.2% of citations from pages outside the top 100 were YouTube URLs.

Agents arrive. Google points to browser agents that read screenshots, the DOM and the accessibility tree, which raises the value of clean, usable pages.

Citations, Retrieval and Grounding

Three terms get conflated. Retrieval is fetching candidate pages. Grounding is constraining the generated answer to retrieved material. Citation is the link shown to the user. A page can be retrieved without being cited.

Bing makes this visible. Its AI Performance report lists “grounding queries,” described by Microsoft as the phrases the AI used when retrieving content it cited, plus citation counts and later citation share. Momentic’s analysis stresses these are not what users typed, so treat them as topics, not keywords. Practical Ecommerce notes the report offered no click data and no mapping of queries to specific citations at launch.

On the question “does ranking predict citation?”, the data is contested:

Ahrefs reported in July 2025 that 76% of cited AI Overview pages ranked in the top 10. Its March 2026 update found about 38% (37% for organic listings only) across 863,000 keywords and 4 million URLs, with roughly 37% outside the top 100. Search Engine Journal reports that Ahrefs attributes part of the drop to improved citation parsing, so the two studies are not strictly comparable.

BrightEdge reported about 17% overlap in a February analysis, using a different method.

A vendor benchmark (CiteLens, 320 templated queries, June 2026) reported far higher overlap for AI Mode, per a secondary write-up. Treat it cautiously: small, templated and vendor-run.

The defensible reading: ranking well is neither sufficient nor irrelevant. Citation outcomes also vary run to run, so single snapshots mislead.

Content Structure and Answerability

Google’s position is that you don’t need to chunk content or write in a special way for AI, and that no ideal page length exists. It does say people appreciate pages organized with paragraphs and headings.

There is research pointing the other way, but with limits. In the original GEO paper, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources produced the largest gains in their benchmark, while keyword stuffing did not help (and reduced visibility on Perplexity in one test). The caveats: the researchers used a research pipeline and Perplexity rather than Google’s production systems; they defined the visibility metrics they measured; and today’s generative engines differ from those of 2023.

Semrush’s study of cited vs non-cited pages (prompts across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, July to August 2025) found five qualities correlated with citation: clear summarization, E-E-A-T signals, Q&A format, structured sections and structured data. That is correlational, from a vendor selling a content tool, and it measured different engines.

A reasonable synthesis: answering the question directly near the top, using descriptive headings, and backing claims with named sources are good writing and already recommended for snippets. They may also help citation. They are not a proven lever, and Google specifically says not to fragment pages for machines.

Original Research and First Hand Experience

This is where evidence from Google, academic work and industry observation converge, even if the quantitative proof is thin.

Google’s own example contrasts a generic “7 Tips for First Time Homebuyers” with a first hand account of a specific decision. The logic is simple: a model assembling an answer from many sources gains little from the ten thousandth restatement of common knowledge. Original data, tested products, documented processes and named expert viewpoints give a retrieval system something it cannot get elsewhere.

The GEO paper’s best performing edits (statistics, quotations, citations) are, in practice, the habits of research driven publishing. The practical takeaway is the same as classic SEO advice: invest in content that deserves to be a source. What cannot be claimed is a guaranteed percentage lift in AI citations from doing so.

Technical SEO and Crawlability

Google states that its generative AI features use publicly accessible, crawlable content, and that standard guidance on JavaScript, duplicate content, page experience and semantic HTML still applies. It adds that perfect semantic HTML is not required.

Outside Google, crawler access is genuinely more granular:

OpenAI documents OAI SearchBot for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot for training, and ChatGPT User for user initiated fetches. Each setting is independent. Sites opted out of OAI SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

Anthropic documents ClaudeBot (training), Claude User and Claude SearchBot (search quality). Disabling the latter two may reduce visibility in Claude’s search and user directed results. Anthropic says its bots honor robots.txt.

The practical point: blanket “block all AI bots” rules can silently remove you from AI search, while blocking only training bots is a separate decision.

llms.txt deserves a direct verdict. Google says it ignores such files. SE Ranking’s analysis of about 300,000 domains found the file on roughly 10% of domains and no measurable link to citation frequency. A Search Engine Land test found 6 of nearly 18,000 citations pointed to llms.txt files. OpenAI’s crawler documentation does not claim it affects citations. Evidence that it helps: none found. Evidence that it harms: none either. Some AI coding agents may use such files, which is a different use case.

Measuring AI Visibility

Google. The generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, with dimensions for pages, countries, dates and devices, and a split between text and multimodal search. Google excludes Search Labs experiments, applies standard row limits to performance reports, and may withhold a report if a site receives too few impressions or opts out of generative features. It reports impressions of links, not the text of prompts.

Bing. The AI Performance report covers Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations, showing citations, cited pages and grounding queries. At launch it had no click data; a mid-2026 secondary guide says API access had not shipped as of July.

Third party tools. They sample prompts and infer visibility. That can be directionally useful, but results vary by prompt set, location and model mode. One Semrush study reported that ChatGPT’s citations shift with Instant versus Thinking mode, per a secondary summary. Google’s own guidance says to evaluate such tools against official documentation.

A caution on conversion claims: Ahrefs has reported AI visitors converting 23 times better than organic on its own site, while Semrush reported a 4.4x average. These come from different samples and methods. Measure your own funnel.

Practical AI Search Optimization Framework

Step 1: Confirm eligibility. Check indexing, canonicalization, snippet settings and rendering in Search Console. Confirm your Search generative AI inclusion setting.

Step 2: Set bot policy deliberately. Decide separately on training, search and user initiated bots. Verify you aren’t blocking search bots by accident, and check your CDN’s default bot rules.

Step 3: Audit for commodity content. Mark pages that only restate common knowledge. Prioritize adding first-hand experience, original data, named expert input and cited sources.

Step 4: Map the topic, not the keyword. For priority topics, list the sub questions a reader (or a model) would need answered. Answer them within useful pages. Do not spin up near duplicates.

Step 5: Keep technical and structured data accurate. Use valid schema that matches visible content; maintain Merchant Center and Business Profile data where relevant. Treat all of it as SEO hygiene, not an AI trick.

Step 6: Measure in layers. Combine the Search Console generative AI report, Bing’s AI Performance report, referral analytics and a small, repeatable prompt panel. Report ranges and trends, never single snapshots.

Step 7: Test, don’t assume. Change one thing, record dates, and re-check over weeks. Where evidence is weak, label the work an experiment.

FAQ

1. Is GEO different from SEO? For Google’s AI features, Google says it is still SEO. Elsewhere, the fundamentals overlap heavily, with extra attention to bot access, citation tracking and off-site reputation.

2. Do I need llms.txt? No evidence supports it for citations, and Google ignores it. It is optional and low priority.

3. Is there special markup for AI Overviews? No. Google says no special schema.org markup is required, though structured data remains useful for rich results.

4. Does ranking in the top 10 get me cited? Not reliably. Ahrefs found about 38% overlap in 2026, down from 76% in 2025, though methodology changed. Ranking still correlates with eligibility.

5. Should I block AI crawlers? That is a business decision, but separate the bots. OpenAI and Anthropic say blocking their search or user-fetch bots can reduce visibility; training bots are a different choice.

6. Can I measure AI visibility in Google? Yes, partially. The Search Console generative AI performance report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device.

7. Does adding statistics and quotes help? Research on a benchmark suggests it can, and it improves content quality regardless. The lift for Google’s production features is not established.

8. Should I write separate pages for every question people might ask an AI? No. Google warns that doing so primarily to manipulate results may violate its scaled content abuse policy.

9. Is AI generated content allowed? Yes, if it meets Search Essentials and spam policies. Google says generative AI outputs can contain inaccuracies and suggests disclosing how content was created where it helps readers.

10. Are AI visitors more valuable? Some studies say so, with very different magnitudes. Test with your own analytics.

Conclusion

The strongest finding in this review is not that GEO is fake. Most effective practices and most of Google’s documented guidance, come down to applying SEO carefully: make your site crawlable and indexable, and ensure your content is original and accurate. Google’s guidance is explicit, and independent studies of tactics like llms.txt back its skepticism.

What is real is the measurement and multi platform layer. Citations are not ranks, engines disagree with each other, and first party reports from Google and Bing are only months old. Anyone claiming precise causal levers for AI citation is ahead of the evidence.

The sensible stance sits between the two camps: keep investing in SEO fundamentals, add citation tracking, manage bots by role, and run honest experiments.
