Its stated reason is that these features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. That doesn’t mean nothing has changed. Two surfaces, AI Overviews and AI Mode, now sit on top of classic results. They behave differently, they send traffic differently, and until June 2026 they were almost impossible to measure. This guide separates what’s proven from what’s merely repeated.

What Are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are generated summaries shown within the standard results page. Google says they help people grasp a complicated topic faster and serve as a starting point for exploring links.

Two details matter for planning:

They don’t always appear. Google says they’re shown only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often don’t trigger. Any strategy that assumes an AI Overview on every query is built on a false premise.

Scale is large. Google reports more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews. This is Google’s own figure and hasn’t been independently audited.

Google has also made them a gateway to conversation. You can ask a follow up directly from an AI Overview and flow into AI Mode with context carried over.

What Is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode began as a Labs experiment. Google introduced it as an expansion of AI Overviews, adding more advanced reasoning and multimodal capability for complex, multi-part questions and follow ups. Google’s current documentation describes it as especially helpful for queries needing further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparison.

Its footprint has grown quickly. Google says AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users. At I/O 2026, Google also named Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default model in AI Mode globally. One behavior matters for measurement. Reporting on Google’s help pages says a follow up question inside AI Mode is treated as a new query. A single user “session” can therefore generate many separate query events.

What Is Google AI Mode? AI Overviews vs AI Mode: Key Differences

Google states that the two features may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary. The practical consequence: visibility in one doesn’t imply visibility in the other. Third party data supports this. I haven’t named a winner, and the evidence doesn’t support one. They serve different moments in a search journey, and Google is deliberately linking them.

The foundation is and unambiguous. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements. The mechanism is retrieval. Google describes retrieval augmented generation, where its core ranking systems retrieve relevant pages from the Search index, and the model then reviews those pages to generate the response. So organic search isn’t a separate world from AI search. It’s the retrieval layer underneath. What’s less settled is how closely the final links track the classic top 10. The evidence is messy:

Ahrefs’ March 2026 study of 863,000 keywords found 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% in an earlier version of the study.

BrightEdge, using a different method, reported roughly 17%.

Published estimates for rank versus citation overlap span from 12% to 93%. One vendor’s own June 2026 studies put AI Mode near 93% and AI Overviews near 40%.

What this means: the studies measure different things (different keyword sets, parsers, and definitions of “cited”), so any single percentage is a snapshot, not a law. The claim “AI Overviews only repackage the top 10” is unsupported. The claim “ranking is irrelevant” is also unsupported, because retrieval runs through the Search index. Why overlap fell and how it differs by feature is Unresolved.

Query Fan Out and Information Retrieval

Google defines query fan out as concurrent, related queries the model generates to fetch additional relevant results. Its own example: for “how to fix a lawn that’s full of weeds,” the fan out might include searches on herbicides, chemical free removal, and prevention. Both features may use it, and Google says it helps surface a wider, more diverse set of links than classic search. This probably explains part of the weak rank to citation overlap. A page may not rank for the user’s typed query but rank well for a sub query the system generated. What you cannot do is see your fan out queries. Nothing in Google’s documentation exposes them, and tools claiming to reveal “the” fan out for your pages are inferring, not reading Google’s data.

There’s also a policy line. Google says creating separate pages for every query variation or fan out query primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy. Chasing fan out with page factories is explicitly the wrong lesson.

How Websites Can Become Useful Sources

Google’s guidance centers on one idea: unique, valuable, non commodity content will likely influence presence in generative AI search more in the long run than anything else in the guide. Its description of what qualifies:

A distinct point of view. First hand experience beats a summary of what’s already online.

Non commodity substance. Google contrasts generic listicle advice with specific, experience-based accounts.

Clear organization for human readers, with sensible headings and paragraphs.

Supporting images and video where relevant. Google notes the AI features can pull in images and video, creating opportunities beyond text links.

Google also reports on the quality of resulting visits: clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with users more likely to spend more time on the site. Treat this as a quality bar, not a formula. Google gives no weighting, no threshold, and no guarantee. It states plainly that meeting all requirements doesn’t ensure crawling, indexing, or serving.

Content, Technical SEO and Entity Signals

Technical baseline. Google lists: allowing crawling in robots.txt and at the CDN or host level, strong internal linking, good page experience, important content in text form, supporting images and video, structured data that matches visible text, and current Merchant Center and Business Profile data. On JavaScript, Google says it can process JS content as long as it isn’t blocked, but sites using JS frameworks are generally more complex to optimize.

Structured data. Not required for generative AI search, and no special schema.org markup exists for it, but Google still recommends it as part of overall SEO because it supports rich result eligibility.

Local and commerce. Generative responses can include product listings and local business details, so Merchant Center feeds and Business Profiles matter where relevant.

“Entity signals.” This is the section where I’d push back on the brief’s own framing. Google’s AI features guidance doesn’t use “entity optimization” or describe entity signals as an AI search lever. Clear site identity, consistent author and organization information, and accurate business data are sensible practice and fit Google’s quality guidance, but any claim that they cause AI visibility is Interpretation at best. Treat it as hygiene, not a tactic.

What Google’s Documentation Actually Says About “AI SEO”

Google has addressed the terminology directly. From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.The same guide covers “AEO” and “GEO” and tells readers to evaluate third party advice against Google’s guidance. Its stated position, in summary:

No additional requirements to appear, and no special optimizations necessary. Google’s AI features page says exactly this.

Google ignores llms.txt and similar files for Search. They won’t help or harm you there.

No need to “chunk” content, rewrite specifically for AI, or build exhaustive long-tail variants.

No ideal page length.

One caveat on provenance. The cached copy of the AI features page I retrieved shows a December 2025 update date, while the optimization guide shows July 10, 2026. Check both for newer revisions before quoting either in client work.

Common AI Search Optimization Myths

“AI Mode replaces SEO.” Unsupported. AI Mode retrieves from the Search index, and Google’s guidance says SEO fundamentals apply. What is real: AI Mode changes where users spend attention and how clicks occur.

“You need GEO instead of SEO.” Contradicted by Google’s own statement above. Third party AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity) are different systems and may reward different things. Google says no third party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so claims to reverse engineer them deserve scrutiny.

“Ranking #1 means nothing anymore.” Overstated. The evidence shows #1 clicks have fallen where an AI Overview appears: Ahrefs reports a 58% lower CTR for the top ranking page when an AI Overview is present, and Pew’s browsing panel found users clicked a result 8% of the time with an AI summary versus 15% without. Lower click yield isn’t zero value, and these studies don’t establish that rankings no longer matter for retrieval.

“AI citations are the new rankings.” Not established. Citations and rankings are different outputs of related systems, and the overlap data above is inconsistent. A cited link also isn’t a ranked position. Seer Interactive reported that cited brands earned roughly 120% more organic clicks per million impressions than uncited ones. That’s a correlation: brands that get cited may already be the stronger brands, so it doesn’t prove citation caused the clicks.

“Traditional SEO no longer matters.” Contradicted by the eligibility requirement: indexed, snippet eligible, in the Search index.

“Get mentioned everywhere.” Google says seeking inauthentic mentions isn’t as helpful as it might seem, since core ranking focuses on quality and other systems block spam.

“Schema is the AI key.” Google says overfocusing on structured data is a mistake for generative AI search.

How to Measure AI Search Visibility

The new report. Search Console now has a generative AI performance report. Google’s help page says it shows impressions, meaning how often links to your site appeared in generative AI features, and it covers both AI Overviews and AI Mode. Dimensions are pages, countries, devices, and dates, with a text versus multimodal filter. Google says it rolled out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026.

What it can’t do. The help page describes impressions only. Independent write-ups confirm there are no clicks, no click-through rate, no position, and no query data, and no separation between AI Overviews and AI Mode. Two practical warnings:

The report draws on data from the Web search type, so AI impressions are already inside your standard totals. Adding the two double counts.

Clicks from AI features still land in your normal Web performance data, blended with classic results. A page can lose clicks while gaining AI impressions.

The opt-out control. A new Search Console toggle lets owners decide whether their site appears in and helps ground generative AI features; opted out sites get no traffic or impressions from them, and Google says the control isn’t a ranking signal outside those features.Opting out is a business decision with real traffic consequences, not an SEO tactic.

Third party tools. Rank trackers and “AI visibility” platforms sample prompts and parse outputs. Google warns that none has access to its internal metrics. They’re useful for trend spotting; they aren’t ground truth.

Practical 2026 SEO Strategy

Secure eligibility first. Confirm indexing, snippet eligibility, crawl access (including CDN rules), and that you haven’t opted out unintentionally.

Audit for commodity content. Pages restating what everyone says are the ones Google’s guidance warns about. Add first-hand experience, original data, and expert judgment, or consolidate them.

Protect high intent clicks differently. For queries where an AI Overview is likely, expect fewer clicks per impression. Prioritize pages where the click is the point: tools, calculators, product pages, original research, and anything requiring a visit.

Build a baseline in Search Console. Track generative AI impressions by page alongside normal clicks and impressions. Look for divergence, not absolutes.

Maintain feeds and profiles if you’re in commerce or local.

Watch brand demand. If AI surfaces expose more people to your brand, branded query growth in Search Console is a defensible proxy. [Interpretation]

Don’t build page factories around fan out queries.

Review agentic readiness only if relevant. Google points to agent friendly practices for businesses with transactional flows, noting emerging protocols such as UCP. Treat this as a watch item.

FAQ

1. Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?
No. AI Overviews are summaries on the results page; AI Mode is a conversational experience. Google says they may use different models and techniques, so links differ.

2. Do I need special optimization to appear in them?
Google says no. Pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible, with no additional technical requirements.

3. Is GEO different from SEO?
Not from Google Search’s perspective. Google calls optimizing for generative AI search optimizing for the search experience, which is still SEO.

4. Does ranking in the top 10 guarantee an AI link?
No. Studies of rank-to-citation overlap range from about 12% to 93% depending on method and feature, so no guarantee exists.

5. Should I use llms.txt?
Google Search ignores it. It neither helps nor hurts, so create one only for other systems that use it.

6. Does structured data help me appear in AI Overviews?
Google documents no special markup for it. Keep markup accurate and matched to visible text for rich results.

7. Can I see AI Mode clicks in Search Console?
Not separately. The generative AI report shows impressions only, combined across both features; clicks are blended into Web performance.

8. Should I opt out of AI features?
That’s a business trade-off. Google says opting out removes traffic and impressions from those features and isn’t a ranking signal elsewhere.

9. Is AI generated content safe to publish?
Google’s guidance says AI assisted content must meet Search Essentials and spam policies. Mass producing pages to capture variations risks the scaled content abuse policy.

Conclusion

The defensible position in October 2026 is narrower than either extreme. AI Overviews and AI Mode are real, large, and different from each other. They retrieve through the Search index, so crawlability, indexing, and quality still gate eligibility. What changed is the click economics and measurement, not the foundations. The strongest supported action is unglamorous: be indexable, be useful in a way a summary can’t replace, and measure with the new Search Console report while respecting its limits. Everything beyond that, including claims about citation formulas, entity tricks, and fan out hacks, is currently interpretation or unresolved.

       Denver Digital

       September 7, 2026

benefits of local seo, digital marketing channels, digital offers

The loudest claims about AI search are also the least supported: “SEO is dead,” “you need GEO instead,” “citations are the new rankings.” Google’s own guidance contradicts the first two outright, and the third and fourth go beyond the evidence.
